Food for Thought

Food, Glorious FoodFood, glorious food!
We're anxious to try it.
Three banquets a day –
Our favourite diet!
— from the opening song of Oliver!

I love to eat – and it shows too much! I've never really had a time that I haven't had food. Oh, I get hungry but nothing like so many folks in the world really go through – I always know that there's another meal coming. Now Kathy and I have been short of money but it seems folks are always glad to make sure you have food. We've been blessed with gift boxes of food when we've been struggling to make ends meet (I'd be just satisfied if ends would at least be in whispering distance of each other). And it seems that God always places me in a position to help minister with food in one way or another.

I have always believed that people need their physical needs met as well as their spiritual needs – Jesus fed people, healed people, even took care of Peter's taxes! I got into "food ministry" honestly because I love to eat and cook – not real spiritual I know. It was also something I could do without a lot of thought, or so I used to think.

I head up First Monday Cafe at our church, I've helped with the now defunct Angel Food Ministry, I've helped with Unseen Hands Ministries monthly food giveway, I've helped unload hundreds of boxes of food for Caring Hands Ministries and I've helped with other local food giveaways involving the Georgia Mountain Food Bank and other groups like our church and Waypoint Center. I don't say any of this to brag but to say that I have a little bit (and I'll admit it's not much) of experience here.

In just the last year, I've seen a lot of food given out and I have to wonder sometimes, "Are we making a difference?". It seems the same people are getting fed but I hear from the statistics that the number of people needed food assistance is increasing. And it seems to me that at times the food we give is not really more than "fluff" (and I realize that you work with what you have when your resources are largely donated). It seems there has to a better way of making sure that people don't go hungry. I wish I knew the answer.

I'm looking into information on alternatives to food banks and food giveaways. I've talked to people who like me want to do more but are not really sure how and I've talked to those who have ideas but don't know how to put them into action. My prayer is that somewhere in the middle of all of this, God will give wisdom and insight to help us help others. Until then, we'll keep doing what we can to help serve the "least of these".

Be well,
Steve

WaterOur recent trip to El Salvador reminded me once again about how precious water is, especially after seeing all the empty bottles that we had stacked up at the end of our trip (luckily someone was going to recycle those bottles and get a little money back on them). The last several years here in Georgia (and across other parts of our country) have been ones of drought – though we have been blessed with some good rains lately.

Our bodies are largely water and we need it more than we need food! Yet like with so much of God's creation, we have wasted this resource and there are many in our world who do not have the luxury of clean water, much less the availability of it coming into their homes.

The Bible talks about "living water" and the "water of life". So many people cannot even imagine that due to the conditions of their drinking water and the death that it brings, especially to children.

I have been collecting some resources and links on organizations and businesses that are working to provide clean water to those who need it. I'll update this post as I find more. Think and pray about your role in being a "water steward". Our world needs it.

Sharing Gospel TractsSing them over again to me, Wonderful words of Life;

Let me more of their beauty see, Wonder words of Life.

Words of life and beauty, Teach me faith and duty:

Beautiful words, wonderful words, Wonder words of Life.

Beautiful words, wonderful words, Wonder words of Life.

– P.P. Bliss

I was reading some posts at Gospel for Asia about how tracts are used to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the words to the chorus of the hymn, "Wonderful Words of Life" came to me. I haven't sung that song in ages and had to go dig up my old Cokesbury Hymnal to find the words. I think those words speak volumes of what we as believers feel about the words of the Gospel Message and for us  they ARE words of Life.

We sometimes are blinded by the blur of information and technology in our lives and scoff at something as simple as a tract. But God has always taken what the world sees as foolish or useless and made it a power tool for His work. And God is using Gospel tracts to reach the hearts of people in areas that probably couldn't be reached in other ways. Gospel tracts are expanding the reach of local pastors throughout Asia and the harvest of souls is increasing.

One Tract Can Change A Life

A Gospel Tract Leads a Witch Doctor to Jesus

Father, how can anyone know and hear unless the Words of Life are shared with them? Help us to see who these words bring life changes to many and let us with joy sing of "Beautiful Words, Wonderful Words". Help us to see how we may help others share these Words of Life through simple things like Gospel tracts. Father, we pray for wisdom, health, and provision for those who provide the tracts, those who deliver the tracts and those who read the tracts. In the Name of Jesus, the very Word of Life, Amen.

Be well,

Steve
