Advent Devotion – 12/11/2009

Posted on 12/11/0907/31/18 by Steve

December 11, 2009 – Voice As Big As the Sea

Scripture: Psalm 29 : 1-4 (ASV)
Ascribe unto Jehovah, O ye sons of the mighty, Ascribe unto Jehovah glory and strength. Ascribe unto Jehovah the glory due unto his name; Worship Jehovah in holy array. The voice of Jehovah is upon the waters: The God of glory thundereth, Even Jehovah upon many waters. The voice of Jehovah is powerful; The voice of Jehovah is full of majesty.

Devotion:
There is something awesome about the sound of the ocean waves crashing. The Psalmist uses this imagery to talk about the voice of God. Job also speaks about the glory and voice of God, “At this my heart pounds and leaps from its place. Listen! Listen to the roar of His voice, to the rumbling that comes from His mouth. He unleashes His lightning beneath the whole heaven and sends it to the ends of the earth. After that comes the sound of His roar; He thunders with His majestic voice. When His voice resounds, He holds nothing back.” – Job 37:1-4 (NIV)  “When His voice resounds, He holds nothing back.”.

Remember the E. F. Hutton commercials, “When E. F. Hutton speaks, everyone listens”? Well, I don’t see how we could ignore a “voice as big as the sea” or the “sound of His roar” or a voice that holds nothing back!

But you know I haven’t (yet) heard that voice of God. Yes, I’ve heard from Him and I am getting better at knowing what He sounds like but He has not yet chosen to roar, rumble or resound – and I’m honestly thankful! But God still speaks volumes – through His Word in our Bible, through His servants, and through my prayer time with Him.

I do believe that whatever volume or strength God uses when He exercises His voice that He holds nothing back. That doesn’t mean He tells me, or anyone else I know, everything (I don’t think we’d fully understand it all if He did) but that when God speaks, He is fully present and He does not idly chatter – His Word does not come back to Him void – His Word is full of meaning and purpose.

When God speaks, do we listen? I hope the answer is an unhesitating yes!

Word of God speak. Would You pour down like rain? Washing my eyes to see Your majesty. To be still and know that You’re in this place. Please let me stay and rest in Your holiness. Word of God speak.
